LIZ LYONS FRIEDMAN SELECTED TO CREATE SAUSALITO ART FESTIVAL POSTER
Sausalito, California, August 6, 2007 — Aptos artist Liz Lyons Friedman, a frequent exhibitor at the Sausalito Art Festival, has been selected to create the Official Poster for the 2007 Festival as well as the design for the T-shirt. The 55th annual event takes place over the Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1-3) at Marinship Park/Bay Model Visitor Center on the waterfront in Sausalito.
Friedman has been exhibiting her artwork since the 1970s, and her work has been shown and sold in galleries in Buffalo, San Francisco, Carmel, Capitola and Los Angeles. She has also participated in juried exhibitions throughout the United States.
"I love the Sausalito Art Festival and am thrilled and honored to have my work chosen for the 2007 commemorative poster," Friedman said. "The art at the Festival is amazing, and the combination of art, wonderful music and the beautiful waterfront setting make for great ambiance, and the crowds of true art enthusiasts are terrific. I have met so many interesting people there."
Born in Buffalo, New York, Friedman graduated from Daemen College with a B.F.A. in Printmaking, and received her Masters Degree in Art at State University New York, Buffalo. She went on to teach art at the high school level in New York and then at the Community College level in California.
She has been a participant of the Annual Open Studios sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Cultural Council since its inception in 1986. Her artwork was chosen for the 1999 Capitola Art and Wine Festival Poster, and was selected for several of the Capitola Begonia Festival Posters from 1990 through 2007. One of her works was selected by Paper Mache Press for the book cover of Inland Sea by Jenny Joseph, author of the lead poem from When I Am an Old Woman I shall Wear Purple. Choice, Inc. Gallery of San Francisco published her serigraph "The Kiss" as its first fine art poster, which sold through the Nature Company, the Horchow Catalog of Dallas, and through Museum Editions, New York. "The Kiss" received the Simpson Paper Company Award of Excellence.
Her work focuses on daily life, romance, fun, friends and celebrations. She draws landscapes on location, adding intricate and symbolic borders later in her studio. Using her sketches and imagination she prepares a drawing to be transferred to a linoleum block, which is then carved using knives and gouges. Her linocut prints are hand-printed using a hand-cranked press, and she colors each original linocut using layers of transparent and vibrant watercolor.
Friedman describes her poster image as “a whimsical piece.” Her intent was to capture the festive spirit of the event, and her border incorporates symbols representative of the Festival: musical notes, grapes, palm trees, shells and a sailboat.
