Each Spring, an Artist Jury Panel (nominated by the previous year's Artists) selects the top 200 Artists from a field of over 1,200 applicants from throughout the world.  Each applicant is assigned a confidential number.  The applicant's 4 art slides are placed in the applicant's category and are viewed by the Jury Panel along with a slide of their booth display.

Each of the Jurors may award up to 5 points per Artist.  Exhibiting Artists are selected from the highest scores in each category.  To ensure an environment for local participants, a one-point advantage is awarded to all Sausalito Artists.  To preserve the history and continuity of the show, the Festival reserves exhibit space for a limited number of invited Artists.  The previous year's award winning Artists are also invited to exhibit.

The 14 fine art and fine crafts categories are: 2-D Mixed Media, 3-D Mixed Media, Ceramics, Drawing, Fiber, Functional Art, Glass, Jewelry, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Watercolor, and Woodwork.

Festival guidelines require that all participating Artists be present throughout the show and that they exhibit a majority of original art in their exhibit space.  Limited edition signed reproductions are permitted, but may not exceed editions of 450.

Exhibiting Artists compete for up to $15,000 in cash and awards.  Judging for the awards is completed by an independent panel of art professionals, including museum curators, gallery owners, art professors and internationally established artist jurors.  Judges tour the Festival and issue awards to exhibiting Artists where excellence is determined.  The judging is conducted on Saturday during the show and awards are presented Sunday afternoon on the Artist Stage.
