Advice for Artists new to Digital Application

Dear Artists,

I have had the honor to participate in several juries for art festivals over the years, mostly with slides and projectors and more recently with the digital images. This is a great improvement as it gives jurors an opportunity to also read what is stated about an image, the description, title, scale, and materials.

Here are some recommendations from my experiences:

Artwork Images: Get the most professional photography done that you can afford. It will be an investment worth doing. The digital age is here and it is wonderful. No more slides with dust, scratches, and mars. Get good lighting on your work, keep the same backgrounds and sizing and show a cohesive group of images of the work that you really plan to show.

For those of you who are new to the Juried Art Services, it is like Zapplication, just different image preparations, and new forms to fill out. You get to create Portfolios of your art work that can be added onto for the future. I advise that you read (and print out as needed) all of the information that the Juried Art Services site provides before you start, including the information on the Application Tutorial and the Checklist. Most shows require 4 to 5 images and a booth shot. Then get all of your images together in their correct format. Then have their sizes, titles and materials ready on hand for the typewritten parts. Upload and fill in the information for all of the images.

Once your Portfolio is together, the application part is easy. Go line by line and properly fill out all of the questions on the forms. If you miss one, you can go back and fill it in. Watch your spelling! Someone who doesn’t proofread or fills in the lines incorrectly will be noticed by the jurors. Those little things do count.

Know the show you are applying for. Which means, is your work going to be appropriate, or of the caliber needed to be shown at this high-ranked show?

Apply to the correct category. We jurors know if you are trying to pass it by us. If you are not in the right category, your score will reflect it, and your category may be reassigned.

Booth Image: This is very important! This is a high quality show and your booth should not only reflect the work that is seen in the art images, but be professional enough to have the Jurors want you next to them at the show. Never show a name (Sign), yourself, or your art patrons in the booth shot.

Best of luck,

Sincerely,
